~ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ~

“Are vapes just water vapor and flavor?”

  • The “smoke” that comes out of vapes is a cloud with small particles of metals and other substances in it. Some of these substances are things that clog up your lungs and can cause lifelong damage. And there’s nicotine, which makes vaping highly addictive.

“Why do people use drugs?”

  • People start using drugs for many reasons. Some want an escape from mental health issues, some use because their friends or family use, and some use because they were prescribed something by a doctor. When addictions develop, the body starts to crave the drug like we crave water in the middle of the desert, which makes it difficult to stop without help.

“What do I do if my friend is using drugs?”

  • The best thing you can do for a friend who starts using drugs is to be there to talk to and support them. Some people use drugs to cope with a hard time they’re going through. Offer to go for a walk, to talk to a trusted adult with them, or to just sit with them.

“Why is the legal drinking age 21?”

  • The human brain doesn’t fully develop until about 25 years old. Drinking before that, especially before 21, makes it more likely our brain development will be disrupted. And drinking before 21 greatly increases the chances of developing an addiction in your lifetime.

“What is the worst drug?”

  • Drugs impact everyone differently, so there isn’t one “worst” drug. What we do know is most overdose deaths in NH are due to a drug called Fentanyl - a synthetic opioid. In New Hampshire, the most common addictions are to tobacco and alcohol.

“Why is marijuana illegal in NH?”

  • Marijuana, also called cannabis or weed, is only legal for medical uses in NH. Non-medical use is called recreational use and is still illegal. There is still not enough data about the long-term consequences of marijuana use. We do know it can be harmful to people’s mental health, especially for people under 25.
